When is it acceptable to steal?

And so we ask you ....

When is it acceptable to steal? What is ok to steal? Can theft ever be excused? Is it acceptable to steal, because someone has stolen from you? Is it ok to steal an idea or a design because it's not concrete?

This morning we woke up to an email from a person on the other side of the globe. She emailed to say that she had noticed that an EBAY wedding "Power Seller" from Swansea, United Kingdom was using OUR copyright images of OUR personalized plate & signature platter designs in their EBAY listings, so as to pass OUR work off, as their own.

Our "guardian angel emailer" had already purchased the product from the EBAY wedding "Power Seller", and upon realizing that she had been "duped", she reported the seller to the "powers that be" at EBAY, contacted us and also contacted the vendor to demand a full refund.

It is said that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery however, Hugh and I do not feel flattered in the slightest. In fact, we take this type of theft very seriously. Nothing will make both of us see red faster than to discover that someone is using OUR designs or OUR images, without OUR permission.

This is what we do NOT understand - If a person claims themselves to be an "artist", how hard could it possibly be to come up with their OWN design, paint their OWN piece and take their OWN photo, to post in their OWN listing? Apparently for some, it is impossible to be creative otherwise, they would NOT resort to stealing from others.

Hugh and I work VERY hard to come up with personalized plate & signature platter designs, that are pleasing to our customers. We understand that not every idea is going to be totally unique however, we will NOT copy our competitor's designs (even when asked to do so). Several of us that sell personalized plates & signature platters adorn their pieces with cupcakes, wedding cakes, interlocking hearts, palm trees or comical characters. We paint these designs, because they are popular BUT, this doesn't mean that we thieve from each other. Our designs are all uniquely different and wonderful. This is interpretation, not thievery.

Our "true" competitors are creative, hard working, friendly, knowledgeable, sharing, talented and honest. Hugh and I feel blessed to be part of a community of competitors that "look out" for each other. If we notice that someone using one of our competitor's designs or images, we will notify that competitor and in return, they will do the same for us.

As for today's "incident", we contacted the EBAY "Power Seller" from Swansea, United Kingdom, to demand that they remove the nine (9) listings, which included our images. We did not receive a reply (no surprise there) however, they have since removed all the listings. We have sent notice to EBAY & we have also contacted another competitor, vis a vis their photos, that this vendor is also using.

We would like to thank our "guardian angel" emailer once again, for making us aware of this dubious wedding vendor. We are happy to report that she did receive a full refund from the thief, along with the following note, from the EBAY vendor.

"Im really sorry you feel this way but these plates are of top standard and people have ripped of my pictures as well unfortunatley so I will give you a full refund straight away."

*Shaking my head* I ask again -

When is it acceptable to steal?
What is ok to steal?
Can theft ever be excused? Is it acceptable to steal, because someone has stolen from you?
Is it ok to steal an idea or a design because it's not concrete?

Introducing Lily - Serendipity Crafts Goodwill Ambassador

Note: This post is not plate or platter related at all :)

Meet Lily the Basset Hound

We have been considering getting a dog ever since we moved into our new home, in October. Hugh wanted one breed of dog, while I wanted another and so, we did a some online research to read up on different breeds and their traits. The more we read, the more it seemed (to me at least) that a basset hound just might be "our kind of dog".

As it turned out, a dog rescue group happened to have a young basset who was looking for a forever home and so, I emailed them to ask a few questions about the dog. The next steps happened rather quickly. The rescue group suggested a visit with Lily, they brought her by the next day and then they asked us if we would like to "foster" Lily for a bit to see how we all got along.

It goes without saying that the moment she walked through our door, she stole our hearts. Lily has found her forever home or rather she has told us that we ARE "basset people" and she also said (in no uncertain terms) that she is staying put.

She placed herself under the tree and declared herself to be our Christmas present.

Although she has a her own bed .....

... she prefers to share my son's bed.

or settle down, in her "comfort spot" near a warm, cozy fire.

Lily has made many friends; both canine and human!

Her cousin Ruggles, even gave her one of his coats (albeit a little short for her long frame).

All in all, she is proving to be a very good dog but sometimes, she just has to be underfoot and right where the action is.

Lily has been nothing but a joy (so far) and we hope Lily will be with us a good looooooong time. Now .... if I could only teach her how to paint or prepare the shipments! :)

Blogging the Blogger

We were delighted to discover that one of our customers was blogging about us :)

We will be painting a custom signature platter for Jeremy and Michelle (his fiancé) very soon. They asked us if we could create a robot couple signature platter and we couldn't have been more thrilled. What fun!

This is a first for us but, it's one design that we have been itching to do!

Jeremy writes -

"Wedding Stuff: Meet our signature plate

Instead of doing a ‘guest book’ like in the usual tradition, we decided to go with a newer trend - the ’signature plate’. A signature plate is just what it sounds like, instead of a book they sign a plate with a special pen. You then bake the plate and voila, it’s permanent. So I went poking around Etsy, one of the greatest craft sites out there, and stumbled onto Serendipity Crafts. We liked their designs, but wanted something a little more ‘us’ so we contacted them. A few (amazingly quick) responses and a day later and bam, they had a mockup for us. They had 2, we picked one and there you go. And it’s bloody perfect - it fits the colors of the wedding, the geek factor, and everything else - wanna see it? Well here ya go"

Serendipity Crafts Finds a New Home!

Hugh, Elizabeth and Serendipity Crafts are moving to a new home, in October 2008!

We have been living and creating in a rental unit, for what seems like an eternity but, a few weeks ago, we took the homeowner plunge!

We put an offer down on this cute little house, located in a cute little neighbourhood, in the suburbs of Montreal and our offer was accepted. The inspection has been done, the mountain of papers are in order and we take possession at the end of September.

Both Hugh and I are so very anxious to move, and set up shop! Our dining room table will no longer be used as a shipping station. Our guest bedroom will no longer be used as a stock room and we look forward to actually being able to live in our new living room. :)

We plan to make this room "Serendipity-Crafts central", so that we can paint and create under natural light and so that we can enjoy all the birds (and other forest friends) who might visit our our back yard.

Hugh is a sucker for the newest gadgets. He stumbled upon a link, showing how to make your own google map. This led to him spending a whole day plugging in the locations of where our platters have traveled.

We have shipped plates/platters to almost every Canadian province and we are missing a few of the continental states. Still, we feel are well on our way to achieving world wide signature platter domination - buu waa hahahaha!

We are pleased to announce a new product to our line up - portrait guest signature platters!

Signature platters are a wonderful twist on the traditional guest book and are perfect for weddings, engagement parties or anniversary parties. These new portrait platters include image of you and your honey. Now, how cool is that?

Your portrait is painted on our standard oval platter, which can accommodate between 75 - 150 signatures. Baking instructions & 1 ceramic signing pen are included with each platter. Different size and shape platters are also available for larger or smaller events. Click to view our shape/size/price list.

To paint a portrait platter, we need a clear, crisp, large photo (professional photos are perfect) to work with.

We will take your photo, simplify it, and then send you a digital mock up for approval.

Once approved, your image is transferred onto a ceramic platter, hand painted and personalized.

The choice of colours & saying is yours. Different size and shape platters are also available for larger or smaller events.

The special introductory price for these 16" x 11.5" oval portrait platters is $100.00 each. After January 1, the price is $125.00.
